After finishing 5-0 in the Patriot League, the field hockey team will host the Patriot League Tournament, beginning Friday, Nov. 2, at Rappolt Field.

Despite outages caused by Hurricane Sandy, the Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex has power, and the games will go on as scheduled. The College’s LCAT shuttle will provide transportation to and from the games starting an hour before start time.

The top-seeded Leopards will face off against fourth-seeded Colgate at noon, while second-seeded American will take on third-seeded Bucknell 45 minutes later, estimated at about 3:30 p.m. The winners will match up in the championship game 3 p.m. Saturday.

The reigning Patriot League champs finished the season 15-1 and were ranked 12th in the country in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll.

Riding out a 13-game winning streak, Lafayette took care of Lehigh and Georgetown this past week in dominating fashion, winning 8-0 and 7-0, respectively. The two shutout wins made it five clean sheets in a row for the Lafayette defense led by sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Deutsch ’15. Deutsch’s 0.93 goals-against average ranks third nationally.

Co-captains Deanna DiCroce and Emily Valeo have been selected to participate in the NFHCA Division I Senior Game Saturday, Nov. 17, at Old Dominion University. DiCroce has racked up 11 points in her last two contests and 142 points over her four-year career. Valeo is leading the nation in assists per game (1.06).

DiCroce, Deutsch, and head coach Andrew Griffiths have received the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year, and Coach of the Year awards, respectively.

I hope that the Lafayette community will turn out in large numbers, students, professors and administrators to support their team this weekend. Not only are they a great team but are worthy representatives of Lafayette and models for the Patriot League ideal of true “student” athletes. Their national ranking ( the highest in Lafayette history for Division 1) is only one metric for their excellence. Best of luck to this amazing group of young women!!
