Field hockey midfielder Emily Valeo ’13 has been selected as one of 12 members of the U.S. Women’s National Indoor Field Hockey squad to compete in one of two European tours this month. Valeo is playing on the Austrian tour team, which is playing in the 33rd International Rohrmax Cup Jan. 4-6.
Featuring teams from Austria, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic, the tour will expose Valeo to a multitude of different playing styles. The 2012 Lafayette Maroon Club Scholar-Athlete of the Year led the Patriot League with 17 assists in 2012, as the Leopards won their second consecutive Patriot League Championship. The squad advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling to No. 6 Maryland, 2-0.
“Emily has worked very hard over the last four years to once again put herself in a position to represent USA and Lafayette on an international stage,” interim Lafayette head coach Jennifer Stone ’04 says. “Emily’s experience with the U.S. indoor team has helped her grow both as a player and as a leader for the Lafayette program, while also giving immeasurable life experiences that she can share with others.”
An All-Patriot First Team and All-Mideast Region selection, Valeo earned her share of accolades throughout the 2012 season, being named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week twice. A member of the Academic All-Patriot League team, she will graduate in May with a major in English.
