Andy Muñoz ’15 (New York, N.Y.) and Monica Girardi ’14 (Scarsdale, N.Y.) learned the intricacies of the financial world and the executive search industry with Barry Bregman ’77, vice chairman of financial services at CTPartners in New York City.

During the externship, Girardi and Muñoz researched companies for recruiting and sourcing; observed interviews, client meetings, and search updates; and became familiar with search documents including position profiles, search strategies, target source environments, search status reports, resumes, and candidate assessments.  They also interviewed consultants to gain a clear picture of the search process and received insight into the inner workings of a consulting business.

“I not only experienced the exposure and engagement necessary to understand this business, but also acquired invaluable knowledge about corporate America,” says Muñoz.  “I’ve been able to learn current trends that are occurring in the dynamic world of business. Apart from the intense research that CTPartners engages in, I saw how multi-faceted, exciting, and sales intensive the executive search industry actually is when it comes to dealing with human capital.”

Bregman, who has been hosting externships through Lafayette Career Services for more than six years, believes it’s important to give externs real work to do.

“Externship experiences are rewarding for CTPartners and are hopefully beneficial for the students,” he says.  “We try to give them a good overview of the business and opportunities to talk to a lot of people in the firm. We also encourage Andy and Monica to stay in touch with us. We have maintained contact with many externs and have been able in some cases to support them as they move forward in their careers.”

For Girardi, a government & law major, the experience has opened up new possible career paths.

“I got to hear from many consultants at CTPartners about what fields they have worked in and how they got to the career they have now,” she says. “Executive search is not something people can major in at school and was not a field I knew much about before the externship. It seems like a career I want to explore further now that I have had a preview.”
