Posse is a national nonprofit that identifies public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential who may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes. These students are placed in 10-member supportive, multicultural teams or posses. Following an intensive training program, the posses enroll at top-tier colleges and universities nationwide to pursue their academics and help promote cross-cultural communication.

This is Lafayette’s 11th year of partnership with the foundation. The College’s first posse from New York City enrolled in fall 2002 and graduated in 2006. In the fall of 2006, Lafayette enrolled its first posse from Washington, becoming just the fifth college or university to enroll posses from more than one city. The College’s first posse was featured in a segment on CBS Evening News.

Each year, the foundation recognizes the contributions of Posse Stars, individuals who exhibit leadership, make significant contributions to the field of education, and positively affect people’s lives.

“Dan is an educational leader of exceptional intelligence, ability, and vision, and The Posse Foundation is thrilled to recognize him as one of this year’s Posse Star recipients,” says Deborah Bial, founder and president of the Posse Foundation. “Thanks to Dan’s leadership and the leadership of his team, Posse’s partnership with Lafayette College has been wonderful. Over the past 11 years, Lafayette has welcomed Posse Scholars from NYC and Washington, D.C., awarding them the opportunity to pursue the many benefits of a great Lafayette education. The Posse Foundation thanks Dan for his role in making the partnership such a success.”

Bial was the principal speaker for the College’s 171st Commencement in 2006, when she received an honorary degree of Doctor of Public Service.

This year’s other Posse Star honorees are Gabrielle Horowitz-Prisco, Esq., a Vanderbilt University Posse alumna and the director of the Juvenile Justice Project of The Correctional Association of New York; Joe Plumeri, the non-executive chairman of Willis Group Holdings PLC; and Uniworld Group, Inc., with the star accepted by CEO Monique L. Nelson, a Vanderbilt University Posse alumna.
