Lafayette honored more than 85 students for academic excellence at the annual All-College Honors Convocation May 5 in Colton Chapel. Awards and prizes recognized outstanding academic success in all four of Lafayette’s academic divisionsengineering, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences.

This spring, 42 students will join Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most respected undergraduate honors organization in the United States. Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa fosters and recognizes excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Outstanding students are eligible for election as juniors or seniors.

President Daniel H. Weiss, Provost Wendy HillEvan Fisher, chair of the Academic Progress Committee and professor of mathematics, and Hannah Stewart-Gambino, dean of the College, offered remarks. Members of the Academic Progress Committee Lauren Meyers, assistant professor of psychology, and Jonathan Lafky, assistant professor of economics, awarded prizes.

The keynote speaker was Amy Herman ’88, developer of The Art of Perception. This innovative project uses the analysis of works of art to improve perception and communication skills. Originally designed in 2000 to help medical students improve their observation and communication skills with patients, the program was subsequently adapted for law enforcement professionals and leaders in industry, education, and finance. She conducts the program nationally for a wide range of law enforcement agencies including the New York City Police Department, the FBI, the CIA, and the Department of Justice as well as for hospitals, medical schools, and first responders.

From 2007-11, Herman was director of education development at WNET, New York’s public television station, and prior to that, she was the head of education at The Frick Collection for 11 years, where she oversaw all educational programs and community initiatives.

(Note: Marquis Scholars recipients, selected from among Lafayette’s most promising applicants, receive a special merit-based financial award and educational benefits. In the EXCEL Scholars undergraduate research program, students do collaborative research with faculty while earning a stipend.)
