The Lafayette field hockey team and captain Deanna DiCroce ’13 received the Patriot League Women’s Team of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year awards, respectively.

In the team category, the Leopards were matched up against Colgate volleyball, Navy women’s basketball, Bucknell track and field, and Navy women’s lacrosse. From June 4-27, fans were given the opportunity to vote for the top team using specific hashtags on Twitter.
In 2012, Lafayette took home its second consecutive Patriot League title and earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, a first from a Patriot League institution. The Leopards finished with a 17-3 overall record and went 5-0 in conference play. Additionally, the Maroon and White were 10-0 in games played at Rappolt Field.

DiCroce’s opponents in the Female Athlete of the Year category were Kelsey Minato of Army women’s basketball, Laura Gorinski of Navy swimming, Stephanie Okpoebo of Holy Cross track and field, and Jasmine DePompeo of Navy women’s lacrosse.
A two-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, DiCroce led the league in points (51) and goals (18), while also notching 15 assists and five game-winning tallies this past season. She was a First Team All-Patriot League selection all four years on College Hill and was named the Patriot League Tournament MVP as she lifted a penalty stroke into the back of the net in overtime of the championship game against American. She graduated with an A.B. as a psychology major.
The Leopards will open the 2013 season Sept. 1 at home against Big Ten foe Iowa.

Another in a series of awards recognizing a very special group of Lafayette student athletes. Their national recognition, the trophies, and the rings I am sure are appreciated but the memories they will have of this very special experience they will take with them forever. It is a year I will remember!! I look forward to even more from this program in the future. For Deanna and our graduated seniors….well done!!!
