Photo Gallery: START Initiative Steams Forward

Earlier this month on the Quad, Lafayette kicked-off STEAM!, a semester-long celebration of origami and its applications in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. The event featured performances by the Kathy Kroll Dance and Paper Theatre and Lafayette Dance Company, the construction of an origami kayak, and a display where students could fold their own artwork.

Other STEAM! events and activities include:

  • the Crease, Fold and Bend: Innovative Uses of Origami exhibit running through Oct. 27 in the Williams Center Gallery;
  • a residency by Peruivan installation and video artist Carlos Runcie-Tanaka Oct. 7-9;
  • several lectures;
  • a paper airplane-folding contest Oct. 24;
  • a collaborative project building a sculpture out of business cards 1-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, in the Williams Center lobby

STEAM is part of the College’s START initiative, which is funded by an $800,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. START works to further integrate the performing and visual arts throughout the curriculum and co-curricular activities, create new programs in the arts, and enhance existing ones.
