The Lafayette community will join ranks to fight poverty during the College’s Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 12-22.
Activities will include making and delivering sandwiches to the hungry in Philadelphia, crafting scarves for Easton’s homeless, answering trivia questions on www.FreeRice.com to earn rice for hungry people in Third World countries, and a “hunger banquet,” with meals typical of those available in impoverished areas.
“Homelessness is something that a lot of people think of as a simple, deserved problem when in reality it’s the result of dozens of issues generally far out of the individual’s control,” says organizer Julia Ben-Asher ’14 (Maplewood, N.J.), a psychology major. “This year’s awareness week is all about showing these root causes in ways that everyone can relate to. It’s so important to do this because so many of the world’s problems can be attributed to some extent to hunger or homelessness, and the first step to solving these problems is understanding them.”

The week is organized by the Landis Community Outreach Center.
