During the summer of his junior year, Kevin Rhodes ’82 interned at Procter & Gamble’s New Jersey manufacturing plant. The experience not only confirmed his career aspirations, it led to a job with the company.
Kevin Rhodes ’82 works with Christopher Verni ’15 at FMI’s plant in Bethlehem.
Today, the chemical engineering grad is president and founder of FMI, a contract manufacturing firm of personal care products in Bethlehem, Pa. His experience has now come full circle as he provides internships and externships to Lafayette students through Career Services.
This summer, chemical engineering major Christopher Verni ’15 (Medway, Massachusetts) learned the ins and outs of manufacturing and product development during a 12-week internship at FMI.
Verni spent time with the compounding, quality control, sales, and product development teams, making significant contributions.
“One project I worked on involved air-operated diaphragm pumps and assessing the performance of these pumps in compounding and filling applications to determine their optimal use,” he explains. “I conducted research on the types of diaphragm material available and suggested a switch to a new material that was both more cost effective and sufficiently resistant to the types of chemicals being used. Since I have left, most of the pumps have been converted to these new diaphragms.”
Verni plans to attend graduate school for chemical engineering. His internship was supported by Career Services’ Lehigh Valley Stipend Fund.
