Members of the faculty at Lafayette College have posted a statement of community values and are inviting other faculty, staff, and students at the school to sign on as supporters of the statement.

The statement affirms four core principles: rejection of bigotry and hatred, support for open inquiry among people with different perspectives, respect for fact-based scientific reasoning, and dedication to the values of humanistic inquiry. The language echoes a similar statement put forth by faculty at MIT.

Did something happen on campus to prompt this? The statement seems to belabor the obvious and is prosaic as these points are already well established by Lafayette College’s values – diversity & inclusion, sustainability, and community engagement (easily found on the Lafayette.edu home page).

As an alumna, I support the statement of community by the Lafayette Faculty: thank you.
