    I am currently listening to an audiobook, Ron Chernow’s biography of Ulysses S. Grant, and so I enjoyed Professor Kincaid’s mini-lecture succinctly illuminating the demise of Reconstructionist ideals during the rise of southern white supremacists — e.g., the federal government’s struggle against the Ku Klux Klan that thwarted any attempt to provide civil liberties to the erstwhile slaves.
