Boren Scholarship
Summary:The Boren Scholarship is a scholarship that funds study abroad to study languages around the world that are critical to U.S. national security. I received the scholarship to study Quechua and Spanish in Peru. I had to write three essays in which I explain the importance of Quechua, Spanish, and Peru to the U.S.’s national security interests and my intention for federal service in the future. I will be traveling to Peru in the spring of 2021.
Anticipated highlight of the experience:I think that learning an indigenous language and interacting with the indigenous communities of the Andes will be the highlight of my experience. I have always been interested in federal service because I feel like it’s the best way for me to make an impact on the world in a meaningful way. I had always wanted to learn another non-European language, but I wasn’t sure which one I’d learn. When considering abroad programs, the one that gave me the opportunity to study Quechua stuck out to me.
How will your experience benefit you in the future?I think this experience will broaden my perspective on global issues such as globalization, climate change, and indigenous movements. In the future, I will be able to use my experience and knowledge to better advocate for marginalized communities and issues relevant to them.
