The Office of Sustainability has partnered with student clubs, campus departments, academic programs, and community groups to host events throughout April
This April, the College’s Office of Sustainability is partnering with organizations and departments across campus to celebrate Earth Month. Four weeks of engaging activities and educational events aim to inspire the Lafayette community to take action to support sustainability, environmental justice, and climate solutions.
The Office of Sustainability collaborated with student clubs, including Lafayette Environmental Awareness and Protection, Lafayette’s Bird Club, Pard Paper, and Pottery Club, to promote hands-on, crafty activities including make-your-own bird-friendly window decals and pottery for potting plants.
Campus departments, including Gateway Career Center, Dining Services, and Lafayette College Libraries, also will be hosting events, including sustainability career conversations, a LaFarm-to-Table dinner, and a movie screening.
Academic programs, including engineering studies, civil and environmental engineering, geology and environmental geosciences, and environmental science and studies, are hosting lectures and talks to give students, faculty, staff, and community members an opportunity to learn and engage in thoughtful conversations.
The events culminate with EarthFest, which will be held on the Quad on Earth Day, April 22. Food and activities will be available from campus departments, student groups, and community organizations. The FD Market zero-waste refill truck (bring a refillable container) and Pop-up Thrift Store are among the activities.
“Being new to the campus, I’ve been ecstatic to see the enthusiasm for engagement during Earth Month,” says Samantha “Sam” Smith, sustainability outreach and engagement manager. “Many clubs and organizations are finding ways to be involved, even if their main purpose isn’t so clearly related to sustainability. It just further reinforces that sustainability is interwoven into all aspects of our lives. Earth Month is a great way to showcase this and involve the greater community.”
