Emily Pagan ’27, Umaz Amer ’28, and Ricardo Jimenez Pina ’28 are headed to South Korea, Spain this spring for learning and cultural immersion
Three Lafayette students will travel abroad this spring through the Gilman Scholarship program, providing them with invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Emily Pagan ’27 (government and law and international affairs, minor in organizational studies) and Umaz Amer ’28 (mechanical engineering and economics) will participate in the Council on International Educational Exchange’s Arts and Sciences program at Yonsei University in South Korea, designed to support students interested in the culture, language, and society of South Korea. Ricardo Jimenez Pina ’28 (mechanical engineering and international affairs) will travel to Spain as part of Lafayette Engineering’s faculty-led program with St. Louis University’s Madrid branch, experiencing both technical courses and cultural immersion.
The Gilman Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, supports study abroad for students who are Pell grant recipients. As part of the College’s efforts to increase participation in study abroad among underrepresented, first-generation, and low-income students, Lafayette’s Office of International and Off-Campus Education works closely with the Office of Financial Aid to reach out directly to all eligible students to raise awareness about this important scholarship opportunity.
March 6 is the deadline to apply for the next round of Gilman scholarships.
“We are thrilled to announce that Lafayette has three recipients for this enriching scholarship program,” says Rochelle Keesler, director of the Study Abroad Office. “It’s been our longstanding goal to increase awareness among our students about the advantages of studying abroad and to help them with the application process for these scholarship programs, including Gilman.”
Keesler encourages students who are interested in studying abroad but have financial or other concerns to contact the Study Abroad Office.
