Richard S. “Rick” Lane Jr. ’75 is president and CEO of Vanguard Managed Solutions, the former network services group of Motorola Corp. Based in Mansfield, Mass., the company offers consulting, networking technologies, and network management services for a wide range of enterprise customers.

After graduating with a B.S. in electrical engineering, Lane went to work for GTE in Africa, where he maintained satellite dishes and infrastructure in the Algerian desert and the Nigerian bush. Later, over a 22-year career with Motorola, he launched and managed a variety of businesses in both wireline and wireless communications.

Acquired in August 2001 by Platinum Equity, VanguardMS is transforming itself, under Lane’s leadership, from a traditional product provider into an innovative managed network solutions provider offering complete voice and data services. With 500 employees and two network operations centers which manage over 40,000 nodes for more than 175 customers, Lane says his company is positioned to provide complete networking solutions to meet the unique needs of a wide range of industries.

Lane, who was captain of the Lafayette lacrosse and hockey teams, is the son of Richard S. Lane ’49.
