Dance and Oscar parties, varsity sports, standup comedy, and screenings of Something’s Gotta Give are on the schedule of campus events this weekend.
Off-campus, the Arts Society will run trips to a major jazz venue in the Poconos Saturday and a New York theater Sunday.
In the first event of this year’s Spring Party Challenge, the International Students Association is hosting a party themed “A Gangster World” 10 p.m. today through 2:30 a.m. Saturday in Keefe Commons. Students coming to the free event are encouraged to wear clothing similar to that worn by gangsters in New York in the 1970s and ’80s. “We will have a DJ for the night who will be playing a mixture of different kinds of music, and we are going to provide snacks, such as chips, cookies, pretzels, chocolate, candy, and drinks,” says Volkan Oktem (Minsk, Belarus), ISA president. “Suit yourself and be there”
A dance party will feature live music from ’80s tribute band Son of Glam 11:30 p.m. today in the Farinon Center Atrium. The group covers songs by bands such as Kiss, AC/DC, Van Halen, Bon Jovi, The Cult, Def Leppard, Dokken, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Mötley Crüe, Skid Row, Poison, and Ratt. Sponsored by Lafayette Activities Forum and Recreation Services, the party is scheduled to continue until 1:30 a.m. Saturday. “Join us in the Farinon Atrium for a night of dancing from a time when the hair was bad, the clothing was worse, but the music was great,” state the organizers.
The men’s lacrosse team will host Drexel 1 p.m. Saturday on Rappolt Field at the Metzgar Athletic Fields Complex. The team opened its season against 14th-ranked Navy last Saturday, falling 14-1.
The women’s basketball team, also in search of its first win, will play American University 1 p.m. Saturday at Kirby Sports Center. The Leopards lost 84-55 to Lehigh Sunday in their final road game of the regular season.
The men’s basketball team will follow with its own contest against American at 3:15 p.m. It lost to Lehigh 78-73 Sunday in the 200th meeting between the rivals at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem.
Comedian Lee Camp will present his stand-up act 10 p.m. Saturday in the Farinon Center Snackbar. Camp was the winner of last year’s Laugh Across America Contest for New York and has opened for Saturday Night Live cast members Jimmy Fallon, Darrell Hammond, Kevin Nealon, and Tracy Morgan. He has written humor columns published in multiple magazines in the U.S. and the United Kingdom and is the author of Neither Sophisticated Nor Intelligent: A College Humorist’s Take on Life. “He is young, hip, confident, and full of clean hilarious observations that keep both young and old laughing hysterically,” states event sponsor Lafayette Activities Forum. “Lee has a universal, inoffensive humor that very few comics are capable of.”
The Arts Society will host a Red Carpet Party 8-11 p.m. Sunday for a viewing of the Academy Awards broadcast on the big screen at Limburg Theater in Farinon College Center. Students can answer Oscar trivia questions during the commercials to win prizes. One also will win a grand prize for picking the winners of major categories. To enter the contest, email blatta@lafayette.edu; entries are due today.
Lafayette Activities Forum will screen the film Something’s Gotta Give 7 and 10 p.m. today and Saturday, and 10 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday, in the Farinon Center’s Limburg Theater. Tickets cost $2. With a running time of 128 minutes, the film is rated PG-13 for sexual content, brief nudity, and strong language. The plot: New York City music executive Harry Langer (Jack Nicholson) is a successful older businessman who has always dated younger women. When he has a heart attack while visiting the mother (Diane Keaton) of his latest trophy girlfriend (Amanda Peet), he must contend not only with his surprising feelings for her, but with the competing affections of the young doctor (Keanu Reeves) called in to take care of him.
