Student a cappella groups Cadence and Quintessence will give a free concert 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Farinon Snack Bar.

Cadence’s CD, Beyond Your Front Door, will be sold for $10 at the concert.

Quintessence, a jazz group, will open with four songs, including “Chili con Carne,” written by Anders Edenroth, originally performed by The Real Group; “My Romance,” arranged by Jennifer Shelton; and “Spontaneous Human Combustion,” written by Richard Greene and Joe Finetti of The Bobs.

Quintessence is comprised of Megan Conway ’06, soprano; Jill Bisplinghoff ’07, mezzo-soprano; Kaytlin Henry ’07, mezzo-soprano; Kara Boodakian ’07, alto; Dave Mitchell ’05, bass; and Ben Flath ’07, tenor, who is making his concert debut with the group.

“This will be Quintessence’s first concert of the new year, and we are excited that our group sound is always improving,” says Mitchell, who leads the ensemble. “We sing one-on-a-part, so it takes a lot of time and focus to create the group sound we want. Each time we get new members, that group sound evolves, and we’re pleased to present our current offering.”

Quintessence members are busy performers, he notes, as each belongs to at least two other campus performing ensembles or plays a varsity sport.

Cadence will perform old favorites such as “Proud Mary,” “Drift Away,” and “Everywhere,” as well as debut several songs, including “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”

“Cadence has been working very hard this semester to learn new songs and expand our repertoire as well as perfect songs that we have been singing for a while,” says group president Toni Ahrens ’05 (Hamilton, N.Y.), a double major in psychology and English with a theater concentration.

“This concert is a good way to relax during the hectic week before spring break and just listen to some great a cappella,” she adds. “People who have never heard Cadence or Quintessence will get a good taste of the a cappella scene on campus and find a good mix of old and news songs.”

In addition to Ahrens, Bisplinghoff, and Henry, Cadence is comprised of Kim Enoch ’04(Hatboro, Pa.), a double major in English and American studies; Sylvia Anserian ’04 (River Edge, N.J.), an anthropology and sociology major; Alyson Gross ’04 (Killingworth, Conn.), a double major in international affairs and German; Lisa Oliveri ’04 (Oradell, N.J.), a psychology major; Alison Poole ’04 (Randolph, N.J.), an English major; Alexis Siemons ’05 (Moorestown, N.J.), a communications and culture major; Jess Lenza ’05 (Hackettstown, N.J.), a double major in religious studies and music; Megan Conway ’06 (North Caldwell, N.J.), an art major; Megan Kunkelman ’07 (Narvon, Pa.); Amanda Finkelstein ’07 (Syosset, N.Y.); Cara O’Donnell ’07 (Marlton, N.J.); and Lauren Duffy ’07 (Monkton, Md.).

Cadence’s major event of the semester will be a concert 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, on the main stage of the Williams Center for the Arts. The program will include the debut of several new songs.
