Biology major Nathan Parker ’08 (Milford, N.H.) has been selected as a finalist in the 2008 Marshall Scholarship competition.
Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. At least 40 scholars are selected each year to study either at the graduate or occasionally undergraduate level at a UK institution in any field of study. Each scholarship is held for two years. Parker is scheduled to be interviewed by a regional Marshall selection panel this week.

Parker, a Trustee Scholar, was also selected as a finalist in the 2007 Harry S. Truman Scholarship competition. He was one of 200 finalists representing 129 U.S. colleges and universities. This summer, he won an Undergraduate Research Fellowship from the American Society for Microbiology. The fellowship provided Parker with a stipend for 10 weeks of research on columnaris disease in freshwater fish with Laurie F. Caslake, associate professor of biology, and a two-year membership in the ASM. He also spent the spring semester studying public health and malaria prevention in Kenya.
Parker is program director of the Best Buddies program through the Landis Community Outreach Center. Last year, he was named Outstanding College Buddy Director of the Year in the Philadelphia region. He has served as program director of Habitat for Humanity and Hunger and Homelessness Week, associate director of the Pre-Orientation Community Service Program, and co-director of Lafapalooza, a one-day service event. He also volunteers at the Spring Garden Childcare Center in Easton.
