Teevrat Garg ’10 assists with copy-editing and contributes additional reading section

Lisa DeTora, assistant professor of English, is currently in the process of editing a book of essays entitled “Heroes and Home Fronts in U.S. Film and Popular Culture.” Teevrat Garg ’10 (Haryana, India), who is pursuing a B.S. in mathematics and an A.B. in economics and business, is working as an EXCEL scholar with DeTora on the book.

The book will be published by McFarland, a leading U.S. publisher of scholarly, reference, and academic books, sometime next year.

According to DeTora, the collection of essays discusses “representations of heroes and the home fronts they protect and maintain in various popular culture forms, particularly film and visual media.”

DeTora is also writing an essay about astronauts for the book, based on previous talks that she has given.

Garg is writing an additional reading section for the work. The section will allow readers to find recently published works that support the theme of one or more of the essays. It consists of a wide range of references, from published essays in journals to books available in online stores.

“I have spent a lot of time looking through online book stores as well journals and databases to find recently published works that support the essays or provide a different perspective on the topics discussed in the essays,” says Garg.

Garg will also participate in the copy-editing process for the book.

“This EXCEL work has helped me hone my research skills by being able to weed through a lot of raw data to find the very specific information that I need,” says Garg. “Because of the time constraints involved, it helped me learn how to focus exactly on what I need and not everything and anything that sounds ‘interesting.’ Also, working with Professor DeTora is a fantastic learning experience. She is so knowledgeable in her field of study and I have certainly learned a great deal from her experience.”
