Seven-week summer institute at Carnegie Mellon University will prepare her for graduate school

Cara Brumfield ’10 (Brooklyn, N.Y.) has received a fellowship from the Public Policy and International Affairs Program in Washington, D.C., and will attend a seven-week Junior Summer Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. PPIA is a national organization that prepares young adults for advanced degrees and ultimately for careers in public policy, international affairs, and public service.

As part of the seven-week summer program, Brumfield will take courses in policy, economics, and professional communication. She also will meet with leaders in the field of public policy and graduate school admissions officers.

The fellowship will provide for institute tuition and housing costs, travel expenses, and a $1,000 stipend. More importantly, as a PPIA Fellow, if Brumfield is accepted into the public policy graduate program at Carnegie Mellon, her tuition will be covered in full by the university.

Brumfield, who has a self-designed, interdisciplinary major called social inequality and identity politics, says her interest in public service was solidified during a summer internship she served with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in New York City. After graduate school, she would like to work for a government agency or non-profit that deals with education policy or urban and human rights issues.

“This program will definitely help me to achieve my goals” says Brumfield. “I will be prepared for graduate school and make potential career contacts, as well as learn hard skills that will help me to perform my job later on.”

Brumfield a Posse Scholar, served another summer internship with Penguin Publishing in New York City and spent a semester studying in Strasbourg, France. She also is a member of Lafayette’s Association of Black Collegians, volunteers in the Easton community through the Landis Community Outreach Center, and works with communities throughout the nation as part of Alternative School Break.
