Turing by John O'Connor

Artists often use drawings as studies for paintings and sculpture, but drawings can also stand on their own. Guest curator Susan Swenson has selected the work of 12 artists for Drawing Systems: A Group Exhibition of Drawings running through Oct. 23 in the Richard A. and Rissa W. Grossman Gallery.

Swenson, editor and publisher of Pierogi Press, a literary and arts journal, will give a curator’s talk, “Personal Drawing Systems,” 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in the Williams Center for the Arts room 108. A reception will follow from 5-6 p.m.

Each of the artists in the exhibit works primarily on paper. They have all devised a unique and dynamic approach to drawing-from idiosyncratic mapping and obsessive schematics to fragmented landscape. Media used in the 15 drawings ranges from graphite and ink to colored pencil on paper, and includes collaged, folded, and cut elements.

Artists in the exhibition are Justin Amrhein, Nadja Bournonville, Dawn Clements, Kim Jones, Jonathan Herder, Darina Karpov, Ati Maier, John O’Connor, Michael Schall, David Scher, Ward Shelley, and Daniel Zeller. Artworks are loaned courtesy of the artists and Pierogi Gallery in Brooklyn.

The Grossman Gallery is located in the Williams Visual Arts Building at 243 North Third Street. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday 1-5 p.m. and Saturday from noon-5 p.m. The exhibition will be open on Saturday, Oct. 23, during the fall drawing marathon.
