The Philadelphia Dance Company celebrates its 40th anniversary and returns to the Williams Center for the Arts 8 p.m. Friday, Nov.12, with thrilling, new selections of funk and hip-hop.

The company’s return to Lafayette features two new dances: Jawole Willa Jo Zollar’s By Way of the Funk is a feast of American rhythm and blues, while Rennie Harris’s Philadelphia Experiment is a hip-hop masterpiece. Lafayette has partnered with media sponsor, WDIY 88.1 FM Community Public Radio, to bring the event to the Lehigh Valley.

Philadelphia’s premier dance company has shaped its repertory with dances by the visionary choreographers of our era, including Talley Beaty, Christopher Huggins, and Ronald K. Brown. Dance Magazine wrote, “Philadanco’s dancers are a miracle of skill and energy. They work in a range of idioms most companies don’t even try to possess.…A company that can do more than just anything…It can represent the possibilities of human spirit through dance.”

Tickets are free for Lafayette students, $6 for students at LVAIC schools, $5 for faculty and staff, and $20 for the public. They can be obtained by calling the Williams Center box office at (610) 330-5009. There will be a pre-performance lecture at 7 p.m. in room 108 of the Williams Center.

This project is partially supported by a grant from Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour, a program developed and funded by The Heinz Endowments; the William Penn Foundation; the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts; and The Pew Charitable Trusts; and administered by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation.

The 2010–2011 Performance Series at Lafayette College is supported in part by gifts from Friends of the Williams Center for the Arts; by provisions of the Josephine Chidsey Williams Endowment, the J. Mahlon and Grace Buck Fund, the Croasdale Fund, the Dr. Aaron O. Litwak ’42 Fund, the Class of ’73 Fund, the Alan and Wendy Pesky Artist-in-Residence Program, the James Bradley Fund, and the Ed Brunswick Jazz Fund; and by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, and National Dance Project/New England Foundation for the Arts. Special thanks to the F.M. Kirby Foundation for its sustaining support.
