Elizabeth Virgin '11

Engineering studies major Elizabeth Virgin ’11 (Sacramento, Calif.) discusses her final year on the women’s basketball team and the importance of communication and leadership.

One class every Lafayette student should try to take:
I recommend my VAST course, Technology at the Dinner Table, taught by Annette Diorio [dean of students]. It was all about food and how it’s grown and made today versus the past. We had some fun projects, sampled different foods in class, and watched interesting videos.

How would you describe your role on the team?
This year I was a captain, which changed my thinking a little bit on how to interact with my teammates. I mostly tried to lead by example, just working hard every day.

What is your fondest basketball memory?
I used to wear pink soccer shorts to games, back when I was point guard. We wore matching wrist bands to help us remember who we were guarding. I definitely also remember all the times I used to watch my sister shoot in our driveway when I lived in Sequim, Wash.

What can you take from your experience playing basketball and incorporate into everyday life?
Communication and focus are key to successfully transferring what you learn into a realistic situation. Being a Division I athlete also requires time management skills.

What do you still wish to accomplish at Lafayette?
I’d like to take part in more of the school sponsored events. I recently went to 100 Nights, the celebratory dance for the seniors who only have 100 nights left at Lafayette. It made me realize I need to really take advantage of the limited time I have left to experience everything Lafayette has to offer.

Sport you would play other than your own?
Volleyball, softball, or track. I love soccer too but I was never very good at it.

Favorite campus to play at (other than Lafayette)?
I have to say Lehigh… It is so close to campus and the gym has a great atmosphere. It feels like a home game every time.

Favorite TV show as a kid?
Scooby-Doo!

Most embarrassing song on my iPod:
I probably have a lot of embarrassing songs to be honest. I never update it.
