Zach Winthrop ’13

A biology major and defender on the men’s soccer team, Zach Winthrop ’13 (Philadelphia, Pa.) discusses the effectiveness of insecticides, the importance of hustle, and taking things one game at a time.

What do you enjoy about your major?
I enjoy biology because it answers the questions we all have about the world and its inner-workings. Biology delves into every facet of this complex world and explains why these complexities function the way that they do. I also enjoy that most biology courses are paired with a lab, which offers a hands-on chance to learn the material from the lecture.

One class that every Lafayette student should try to take is…
Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy is a class full of cool and interesting dissections of many different animals, and it connects the human race to all other vertebrate species. It is both interesting and humbling.

What has been your most unique academic experience at Lafayette?
In organic chemistry last semester, we created an insecticide that we were able to test with actual insects. It worked really well.

What goals have the men’s soccer team set for this season?
Our motto this year is to keep our sights set on the practice, video session, scout our game at hand. As opposed to setting huge goals like winning a Patriot League Championship, our outlook is that if we can “win the day” each and every day, goals like the PL championship will come on their own.

How would you define your role on the team?
First and foremost, my role on the team is a defensive one. We pride ourselves on our defense. As a defender, this means that my main focus at all times is defense. Beyond that, my personal role on the team is to bring energy and hustle. I’d compare my role to that of Bobby Jones for 76ers in the 80’s, just a hustle guy…haha.

What song/band/album is most likely to be playing on your iPod?
“Fake Plastic Trees” by Radiohead

What movie can you quote word-for-word?
Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, Monster’s Inc., Finding Nemo, and Newsies

Who is most famous person you have ever met?
Bill Clinton
