Earlier this week, the Contemporary Music Ensemble presented Avian Requiem, an evening-length semi-theatrical piece. The work was composed by ensemble members and director Kirk O’Riordan, assistant professor of music, and includes transcribed bird songs, improvisation, live and pre-recorded electronics, and spoken texts.

The concert featured special guests President Alison Byerly and Williams Center Gallery artist-in-residence Michael Pestel. The piece is presented in conjunction with the gallery’s exhibit Requiem: Ectopistes Migratorius, which commemorates the 100th anniversary of the extinction of the passenger pigeon.
