“The Lion’s Ear: Pope Leo X, The Renaissance Papacy, and Music” by Anthony Cummings

Several faculty members have recently published new major works or have been nominated or received awards for their books.

Anthony Cummings, professor of music, received the American Musicological Society’s Noah Greenberg Award at its annual meeting in Milwaukee.

The award stimulates cooperation between scholars and performers for outstanding contributions to historical performing practices. Cummings is being recognized for his book and CD project, The Lion’s Ear: Pope Leo X, The Renaissance Papacy, and Music, which was published in 2012 by The University of Michigan Press.

The Tao of Humiliation

His book attempts to reconstruct and describe what musical life was like in Pope Leo’s court. He is collaborating with the renowned early music ensemble La Morra on the CD, which will accompany and musically illustrate the book.

Two faculty books were nominated for the prestigious Kirkus Prize. Supreme City: How Jazz Age Manhattan Gave Birth to Modern America by Donald L. Miller, MacCracken Professor of History, was one of Kirkus Reviews’ top non-fiction books of 2014; and The Tao of Humiliation by Lee Upton, writer-in-residence and professor of English, was named one of the year’s top fiction books.

“Supreme City: How Jazz Age Manhattan Gave Birth to Modern America” by Donald L. Miller

Eric Ziolkowski, Manson Professor of Bible, recently published Essenes Fideism, The Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception, Volume 8. Ziolkowski is one of six main editors overseeing the 30-volume encyclopedia project. The entire set is expected to be completed in 2018 and be accompanied by an online version.

Daniel Quirós, assistant professor of Spanish, has published his third work of fiction, the crime novel Lluvia del norte.

Skip Wilkins, associate professor of music, has released his latest album, Trio WUH Live in Jazzinec. Recorded during his European tour in spring 2013, the CD features “underplayed chestnuts” from the Great American Songbook.
